The Basket of Mangoes Short Story
Simi was a very untidy girl. When she came home from school, she would throw her bag here and her shoes there. Anyone who entered her room had to make his way through the piles of books and clothes and toys and so on. “Simi, you must keep your room tidy,” her mother was tired of telling her. Simi tried to keep her room clean but not for long. One day, her aunt came to her house.
She had brought a basket of juicy mangoes for Simi as she loved mangoes. Simi took the mangoes to her room in order to eat them later. “Oh! Where should I keep these mangoes? There is no place,” she said to herself? With no proper place to keep the basket of mangoes, she kept the mangoes on a chair and went out to play. Tired, she returned to her room in the evening. She sat down on the nearest chair to have some rest. “Squash! Squelch!” She jumped up and gave out a cry of shock.
To her horror, she found that she had sat on the mangoes! All that was left was a pulpy pile of juicy mangoes! Her mother came running to her room on hearing her shout. She was shocked to see that all the mangoes were crushed. “Oh, my favorite dress is also spoilt! Mummy, what shall I do?” lamented Simi. “That is why I always tell you to keep your room clean,” said Mummy. “I am sorry mummy. Now I will always take care to keep my room clean.” From that day, Simi learnt to keep her things in order.
