A box of Kisses

Once there was a man who worked very hard to provide a square meal to his family. The man had become bad-tempered due to his hard life. As money flow was tight, he became even more irritable. It was Christmas Eve. He found that his child had used an expensive golden paper to decorate one shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. He also became worried about the money that the girl must have spent in buying the box.

The little girl was punished severely for her offence. Nevertheless, the next morning, the little girl brought the gift box excitedly to her father and said, “This is for you, Daddy!” Her behaviour made her father feel embarrassed at his earlier reaction and made him regret how he had punished her. When he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and lost his temper again. “Don’t you know, you foolish girl?” he said harshly, “When you give someone a present, there must be something inside the box!” The little girl looked up at him sadly, with tears rolling from her eyes upon her rosy cheeks, and whispered, “Daddy, it’s not empty.

I blew kisses into it until it was all full. These are all for you.” The father was deeeply touched. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He apologised for his uncontrolled anger. The little girl flung her tiny arms around father’s neck and hugged him. Time passed by and daddy’s little darling was married off. The father wept inconsolably and kept that little golden box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he missed her, he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the unconditional love of her sweet child who had given him the box.
